On April 12th 1961 a Russian test pilot was able to do the first step for the exploration of space. Other countries are thinking about, that it is not possible, that Russians will be the first - but they did it. Yuri A. Gagarin was the first human in space, and also he orbited Earth for one time and was landed safely.
His flight was definetely the beginning to start the "Space Race" for human space flight. On November 1957, the Russians was also the first to lifted off the first handmade satellite, called the "Sputnik". Now, after the flight of Gagarin, the world was infected with space-flight and the other competitior, United States of America want to do it in the same way. Some weeks later, the first American in space was Allan B. Shepard, and John Glenn one year later was the first American, who has orbited the Earth.
Russians were in the most of space related missions first. Not only for the the first satellite and the first man in space. They have the first woman in space (Valentina Thereskhova 1962), they have the first free flying man in space (Alexeij Leonov), and they docked at first time with two spacecraft in earth orbit.
