Fly the Legend: the 'Phabulous Phantom'!
The F-4 Phantom II was firstly used by the U.S. Navy as an interceptor but was also capable of flying as a ground-support bomber for the U.S. Marine Corps. The plane flew every conceivable military mission: air superiority, close combat support, interception, airspace defense, long-range strikes, fleet defense, attack and reconnaissance. The jet could fly short training flights and 4.5-hour missions as a "Wild Weasel" in search of enemy air defense systems. It starred in both the Vietnam War and in "Operation Desert Storm", with a record of 280 air combat victories and the destruction of over 200 anti-aircraft sites.
From 1958 to 1979 a total of 5195 F-4 Phantom were built, until 1996 – more than 38 years after its introduction – it was put out of service in the United States. In the late 90s of last century, more than 1,000 of the machines have been technically enhanced at various air forces in the world. Some of them, as even the Bundesluftwaffe, fly these modernized jets up to today.
The pilots and ground crews have been giving it many nicknames, 'The Phabulous Phantom' is perhaps the best known among them. They all praise the Phantom F-4 as a work horse that you can fully rely upon bringing its crew safely back home after each mission. It's been more than 50 years since the first Phantom jet took to the air on May 27, 1958. Thus began an unprecedented success story: In the 93 years from the first powered flight by the Wright brothers to the day the U.S. took the Phantom off duty in 1996, more than 40% of all flights worldwide were flown with this machine.
The Phantom is the first airplane simultaneously flown in the two world-famous aerobatics teams "Blue Angels" and "Thunderbirds". 11 nations around the world relied on its power: Australia, Egypt, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Iran, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Spain and Turkey.
The F-4 Phantom II flies faster than Mach 2 and carries payload up to 8,000 kg. Each aircraft has 16,620 feet of internal wiring and 643 000 fasteners holding it together.
